What Your Opener's Symptoms Usually Mean

Before you call, it helps to know what you are looking at. These are the patterns we see most often and what each one normally points to.

Remote works, wall button doesn'tUsually a faulty wall button or the low-voltage wiring behind it. Normally a quick, inexpensive repair.

Safety Sensors, the Most Common Opener Call in San Diego

By far the most common opener complaint we handle across San Diego County, from Scripps Ranch to National City, is a safety sensor problem. Every modern opener has two small sensors near the base of the door tracks. One sends an infrared beam, the other receives it. If the beam is broken or the sensors are out of alignment, the opener refuses to close the door.

You can check this yourself. Look at the LED lights on both sensors. If one is blinking or unlit, that is your problem. Common causes:

  • A sensor knocked out of alignment, often by a trash can, a bike, or a stray ball.
  • Bright San Diego afternoon sun shining directly into the sensor lens.
  • Dust, spider webs, or debris on the lens.
  • A loose wire connection at the sensor bracket.
